We all occasionally dream of escaping to a tropical paradise, swimming along coral reefs and marveling at the majestic colours of the abundant sea life. Unfortunately, the reality of these dreams are slowly dying and our irresponsibility is affecting all life on earth, and especially the coral reefs, the lungs of the ocean.
SUP Clean Up has the vision to become a global initiative encouraging paddlers all around the world to stand up against pollution and excessive plastic consumption.
Why SUP Clean Up
As most of us are aware, the oceans are clogged with plastic. It is estimated that by 2050 plastic in the ocean will outnumber fish by 2:1. Coral reefs are dying as ocean acidification is of the rise. This is all directly linked to human activity.
We have the sole responsibility to change our ways and contribute to a healthier Earth rather than continue down our mindless path of global, and therefore self, destruction.
SUP Clean Up is a simple, yet effective way of engaging a local paddling community, encouraging them to contribute to a cleaner and healthier ocean.
Clean Up efforts also raise awareness, contribute to and encourage local recycling. By using Stand Up Paddle Boards, individuals have fun at the same time. In many cases, a lot of volunteers are new to Stand Up Paddling and are therefore learning a skill.
It is about developing a community of like minded people and nurturing an outdoor lifestyle that creates a positive and lasting effect.
Where it all Started
I was a real outdoors kid. Growing up in Cape Town, nature was literally on my doorstep. I grew up across the road from a nature reserve so most days saw my friends and I getting up to all sorts of shenanigans in the trees, mud, river and grassy fields. Unfortunately, the perimeters of this reserve were to some, a dump site, much to my father’s disgust. And I guess that’s where it all started.
I spent a lot of my time in the sea. Starting nippers from a young age and hanging out at the beach most weekends, come rain or shine. Over the years, as I became increasingly aware of the natural world and just how much of a cancer human activity has become, I slowly implemented changes in my life. I avoid toxic household detergents and personal care products, single use plastics, and the list goes on.
We’re all familiar with the saying “be the change you want to see in the world” so I recently decided to make it official. By combining a hobby with the change that I wanted to be, SUP Clean Up was born.
SUP, the acronym for Stand Up Paddling, has become one of the world’s fastest growing recreational activities and sport to a lesser degree.
After moving to Dubai a little over a year ago, I was surprised to see how much pollution there is in the ocean considering that there are literally no rivers to act as trash conveyor belts. I decided to do something about it.
SUP Clean Up is my little way of giving back to what has brought me so much joy and solitude.
We invite anyone (who can swim) to join us at the next SUP Clean Up. We have a limited number of boards available so it’s advisable to book. No previous SUP experience is required.
See you on the water – trash in hand.
